Neighbour Day 2019 started for me with putting up some barriers on 21st Ave to close down the block to traffic - a first for Capitol Hill Neighbour Day! Immediately I had some helpers decorating the road with side walk chalk, drawing hopscotch squares and stars. The weather was lovely. As the day went on I enjoyed live music, a yummy sausage, and chatting with local businesses. I even got my family's bikes tuned up for free! I wrapped up the day sipping a glass of sangria on the sunny deck of the community centre. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard to make it happen.

The Capitol Hill Community's first Neighbour Day celebration wasn't planned as such.

In June of 2013, the Community Centre had organized a BBQ fundraiser for the Dinosaur playground. We had planned an evening of burgers and hot dogs, and some live musical entertainment. People attending would be charged at the door and all funds would go towards the new playground. Earlier, on the day of the event, Calgary started flooding, and our plans changed quickly from a fundraising event, to a free community BBQ with an invitation to anyone displaced by the floods to come up for a free meal and to escape the realities of the disaster for a brief moment. A few members of the Barberellas, a group of barbershop singers were unable to come due to living on the other side of the river, but the rest of them were eager and willing to contribute to our event. The event ended the evening with a lively and exuberant set by Aaron & the Cultivators, a Capitol Hill resident at the time.

This coming together of neighbours, and community is the heart of Neighbour Day in Capitol Hill. Since 2013 we've continue to grow community through increasing opportunities for neighbours to meet at the Community Centre through recreational classes, social gatherings and clubs. By reaching out to the local business community, Neighbour Day found a partner, and has evolved to showcase the best that our community has to offer.

My family spent the whole day at Neighbourday, eating lunch from the Dogfather while listening to the band on the stage. My children participated in the bicycle safety course & obstacle course offered by Safe Cycling Calgary. We caught up with the many local businesses, and had a free family portrait taken by Studio Lumen. We ended the day in awe by the musical talents showcased in the Talent Show organized by Bryan Buss of Leroux Studios. The family bands that performed were our favourite and has inspired our family to jam and perhaps enter into next year's talent show.

Many thanks to the vendors, Bryan Buss for organising the Talent Show, Abi Harker for organising everything on the ground, The Rockin’ Rebels, Scott Taekwondo and his students for putting on their demonstration, Velo Fix for coming out to treat everyone’s bikes, Pamela McHugh for organising the Bike Rodeo and Safety event, The Dog Father for the food, Happy Feet for providing the football, Brinna for manning the bar and mixing up her Sangria recipe, and all the volunteers who helped out on the day. Hoping to see you again next year!

Neighbour Day 2019: What To Expect
Blog Headers.png

By Abi Harker, Facilities and Rental Manager.

It's that time again where we celebrate all things community!

Our annual neighbour day and business fair is on June 15th this year. I have been very fortunate to lead this shindig for the past 4 years. Luckily, I have a great team who makes this work like a well-oiled clock.

Each year, our Neighbour Day has grown in activities, ideas and people enjoying the event. We strive to offer the locals and people from all over, a fun afternoon filled with music, displays of our rentals we have such as Tae Kwon Do and Salsa to name a couple, food trucks, bouncy castle, free events, music  and our ever fabulous bar and bar manager Brina to pour a beer or two. It's a great way for people to see what we have to offer during the week.

The idea for this started 3 years ago, a fantastic local business fair incorporated into Neighbour Day was hatched between myself, Bryan Buss owner/operator Leroux Music and Dr. Laura Vandertogt,  Chiropractor of the Wellness Studio. One rainy day at Weeds Cafe, we met and thrashed out an idea to bring local businesses together to share who they are and what they do to help grow this wonderful community. Both Bryan and Laura were instrumental in reaching out to the other businesses that each year, grew in size and wanted very much to be back in the fold of our special day.

Our vision is to provide a day where all are inclusive and engagement of the community is key. Each year we hope to make our event bigger and better. Without the support we have of the community board, the city and all the countless volunteers and their time, none of this could happen. We are very grateful!

Please come and join us on June 15th at 11am. We expect the fun to start around 11.30-noonish as we start to get everyone in place around that time. The bar will be open - bring cash for this and the food. The Dog Father food truck will be serving food, hot coffee and tea - this was our biggest request from last year!

Events to look forward to: a fantastic bike clinic and bicycle obstacle event for kids - Bike Rodeo. Fun free interactive events such as Happy Feet soccer for little ones, a great bouncy castle and as mentioned displays from our great renters for martial arts.  All the local businesses that come to join the day will be very excited for you to visit their table and found out who they are - don't be shy!

We also have a local band playing tunes of yesteryear, so dance your face off! To top the day, there l be  a super talent show starting around 3pm, that showcases local kids and adults. We promise no Simon Cowell though!

We can guarantee fun, laughter and mingling with familiar faces, but not the weather. Just come prepared for rain/shine or pollen  as we plan to enjoy regardless :-)

Neighbour Day 2019

Neighbour Day is taking place Saturday, June 15th.
To celebrate, the CHCA and Capitol Hill Business Community are organizing an event which will celebrate our vibrant and diverse community.

As with any successful community event, there will be live music, food trucks, demonstrations and opportunities for neighbours to get to know one another. In 2017, we had hundreds of attendees throughout the day, as well as in 2018 (an even much larger production!). We expect a much higher volume this year.

The business fair which will be similar to a mini-trade show or mini-lilac festival, and will feature our community’s local independent businesses. Participating businesses will be set up as vendors, with tents and tables covered by the registration payment.

This is a fantastic opportunity to:

  • Showcase and market your business

    1. Create community presence and awareness of what your business has to offer

    2. Interact with people living in the community & meet new clientele

    3. Show off and sell products

    4. Educate the public about your services

    5. Network with other local businesses

We connected with dozens of new leads during the business fair last year, with many becoming weekly customers!
